How much should I tip at a restaurant?
+
The standard tip at a sit-down restaurant in the US is 18–20% for good service. For exceptional service, 25% or more is appreciated. For poor service, 10–15% is acceptable. Servers typically earn $2–5/hr in base wage and rely on tips for income — never tip zero unless there's a serious problem.
Tip before or after tax?
+
Etiquette says tip on the pre-tax subtotal (the server didn't set the tax rate). However, most Americans tip on the post-tax total for simplicity — the difference is small. On a $60 bill with 8.5% tax, tipping 20% on $60 vs $65.10 is only a $1.02 difference. This calculator supports both — use the toggle above.
How do you calculate a 20% tip mentally?
+
Move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it. For a $47 bill: 10% = $4.70, doubled = $9.40. For 15%: get 10% ($4.70) + half ($2.35) = $7.05. For 18%: get 20% and subtract 10% of the 20% amount — $9.40 − $0.94 = $8.46.
How do you split a bill unevenly?
+
For uneven splits, each person calculates tip on their own subtotal separately. Run this calculator for each person's individual order amount. Alternatively, total the bill with tip and divide by each person's proportion of the food ordered. For completely separate orders, most restaurants will split the check on separate cards if asked at the beginning of the meal.
Should you tip at counter service or fast food?
+
Tipping at counter service is optional — 10–15% for good service, nothing required for basic order pickup. The tablet tip prompts at counters are relatively new; there's no social obligation to tip for someone handing you a pre-made item at the counter. However, tipping baristas and fast-casual workers is increasingly common and appreciated.
How much do you tip for food delivery?
+
Tip 15–20% for standard delivery, or a minimum of $3–5 for smaller orders. For long distances, difficult weather, large/heavy orders, or exceptional service, 20–25% is appropriate. Tips on delivery apps (DoorDash, Uber Eats, GrubHub) go directly to the driver — the platform fee is separate.

Tip Calculator — How Much to Tip and Why It Matters

Tipping is one of those everyday financial decisions that adds up more than most people realize. If you dine out twice a week at $40/meal and tip 20%, that's $832/year in tips. Understanding standard tipping norms helps you tip appropriately — generously when deserved, without over-tipping or feeling pressured by preset tip screens that start at 25% for counter service.

Standard Tipping Rates by Service Type (2026)

Sit-down restaurant servers: 18–22% on the pre-tax total (they earn well below minimum wage — $2.13/hour federally — and tips are their primary income). Bartenders: $1–2 per drink, or 15–20% for tab service. Food delivery: 15–20% minimum — delivery workers often cover their own fuel and vehicle wear. Hotel housekeeping: $3–5/night left daily. Taxi and rideshare: 15–20%. Haircut/salon: 15–20%. Coffee shop counter service: no obligation, but $1 is appreciated. Pre-set tip screens on iPads at counter service aren't social obligation — it's fine to select "no tip" or a custom lower amount.

How to Split a Bill Fairly

When splitting with a group, always add the tip before dividing — not after. Calculate the full amount including tip, then divide by the number of people. For unequal splits (one person ordered more), use the per-item method: each person pays for their own items plus their proportional share of the tip. This calculator handles both even and custom splits with per-person breakdowns.
